Firmware Upgrade with RS232

Do you have a Kernel Panic?
Something went wrong with the firmware upgrade?
You bricked you'r router? roll

Here is a description of how you can repair your router by flashing the firmware with the serial port and Xmodem protocol.

Needed hardware: RS232 interface or our RS232 MOD.

If you don't have the RS232 MOD you will have to connect you'r RS232 interface to the right contacts on the router board.

Opening your Router will void your warranty!!
If you do this, it's on your own risk.

The folowing pictures will show you where the contacts are.

6104K and 6104KP:

6114WG:
Comming soon

After connecting your interface with the router we can start flashing the firmware. smile

Start you'r HyperTerminal or any other Terminal software you like and connect with the right comm port.

The comm port configuration is:
Bits per second: 115200
Data bits: 8
Parity: None
Stop bits: 1
Flow control: None

After turning the route ON (pluging the power cable in the router) you have about 2sec to hit the SPACE key 3 times.
If you are not fast enough you will not stop the bootloader! If you did everything right you will get the following menu.

ADM5120 Boot:

Linux Loader Menu
====================
(a) Download vmlinuz to flash ...
(b) Download vmlinuz to sdram (for debug) ...
(c) Exit

Please enter your key :

Now that we have this menu, we can burn our firmware with pressing the key "a"
After pressing the key "a" you will have about 5-10sec to send the firmware file to the router with the Xmodem protocol.
You don't have much time to search around for the firmware file, so i suggest you keep it at the default path of yout Terminal software big_smile
After sending the firmware file, the file upload will begin, which will take about 6min or more (can't remember the right time hmm )
When the upload is finished the router will flash the firmware and then you will get the bootloader menu again smile

ADM5120 Boot:

Linux Loader Menu
====================
(a) Download vmlinuz to flash ...
(b) Download vmlinuz to sdram (for debug) ...
(c) Exit

Please enter your key : a

Downloading...........PASS

Eraseing nor flash.......PASS

Programming nor flash...PASS

Linux Loader Menu
====================
(a) Download vmlinuz to flash ...
(b) Download vmlinuz to sdram (for debug) ...
(c) Exit

Please enter your key :

Hitting the key "c" will exit the menu and reboot the router with you'r new firmware cool

That's it....simple, isn't it big_smile

Re: Firmware Upgrade with RS232

That's great! Yesterday I tried several time to download by minicom, but got the same result: failure!
Read what you said, I know what's wrong: I can't completed searching around for the firmware file in 5-10 seconds.

Thank you! But After booting, It need a username and password! What is that?

Re: Firmware Upgrade with RS232

Hi huki,
It's the same thing, only the JP2(UART) is at a different position on the board.

If the original Edimax firmware is on your router, and you want to try/use AMiLDA, then you can do it with the web interface...you only have to change the first 4 bytes on the AMiLDA firmware to the 4 bytes of the correct Edimax firmware. (It's best to use a hex editor.)

But if the router is not booting any more....then you'll have to do it the RS232 way.  hmm

Re: Firmware Upgrade with RS232

Only know one first aid to kernel panics and that is to restart my computer because that is what it says in the screen and after that, I'm in limbo. lol. The last time my Mac went into that state I had to buy a new RAM.
