can't login to the router

There are times when no matter how many times i try, i can't seem to be able to use telnet to login to the router. I get invalid password. Login via the web interface always works.
This seem to happen more when the router has a bigger uptime. If i reset it, i can login right away.
Also when i do manage to login somethimes strange characters appear when i type something.

Re: can't login to the router

This happens when a telnet session exitted graceful by typing the exit command. When you start a telnet session to the router and the kill your telnet client without giving the exit command, you won't be able to login again. I did not look into the cause but fighted the symptom. I added a reset telnetd button on the reset web page. It restarts the telnet daemon and so enables telnet logon again.

Re: can't login to the router

The telnet daemon doesn't die. Otherwise how can you get a login after 3 or more failed attempts?

Code::

$ telnet router
Trying 192.168.1.1...
Connected to router.
Escape character is '^]'.

Welcome to AMiLDA Linux

amilda login: root
Password:
Login incorrect
amilda login: root

amilda login: root

Login incorrect
Connection closed by foreign host.
artworx@angels ~ $ telnet router
Trying 192.168.1.1...
Connected to router.
Escape character is '^]'.

Welcome to AMiLDA Linux

amilda login: root
Password:
~ #

Something strange is going on, because somethimes strange characters appear on the command line:

Code::

~ # cd /etc
-sh: cd: can't cd to /etc

Re: can't login to the router

I don't have a serial interface. I just telnet to the router. This happens more often when the router has more then a day uptime. Today i get:

Code::

amilda login: roo0
Password:
Login incorrect
amilda login: root      i^@^

NOTE: the first one is not a spelling error.

Re: can't login to the router

Hi

It appears to be kind of data corruption error in the ethernet driver. That will be fixed before the next release, even if it delays a bit.

Sergio

Re: can't login to the router

I did not say that the telnetd dies, but it must be restarted (= stopped and started) to get a telnet client connected again.
I mean that you are using my version of amilda. try browse to http://<router-address>:8080/reset.php and press the restart telnetd button. now you can connect the telnet client again.

Re: can't login to the router

Hi,

I think it is the /etc/securetty that should be modified in order to allow root login at multiple ptys. After I added in the /etc/securetty the following after ttyp0, I could login via telnet in multiple sessions:
ttyp1
ttyp2
......

Another resolution would be to compile busybox without support for /etc/securetty.

Re: can't login to the router

Hi

AMiLDA 0.4.13 already includes the required fix, which includes many more entries in /etc/securetty. Of course that doesn't explain the strange characters appearing...

Re: can't login to the router

For me login works as soon as I pull the WAN cable or otherwise cut the pppoe connection.
strange behaviour. but a workaround for me.

EDIT: In my version of amilda I just removed /etc/securetty completely. This allows me to login under all circumstances. Of course the telnet port remains blocked by the firewall, so I dont see any security issues here.
